Sitting Down at Your First Casino Table

Starlight Casino in Queensborough lists 54 live table games, and the first seat at any of them can feel like a test. It really is not. This page explains the five games in plain words, how to join a table, and how to leave one calmly.

Part 1

Five Table Games, One Sentence Each

Baccarat is a card game where you bet on the player hand, the banker hand or a tie, and the dealer handles every card after that. In blackjack, you and the dealer each take cards, and the round turns on whose total lands closer to the target without going over. Craps is a dice game where one player rolls a pair of dice and the table bets on the result.

Pai gow has you split the cards you are dealt into two hands, then set them against the dealer's two hands. Roulette uses a spinning wheel and a small ball: you place chips on a numbered layout, and the pocket where the ball stops settles the round. The guide does not rank these games, so the right first table is simply the one that makes sense to you.

Part 2

Joining a Table, Step by Step

  1. Look for an empty chair at an open table with a dealer standing behind it.
  2. Ask the dealer about the table minimum, which is the smallest bet allowed on each round.
  3. Hand over cash only when the dealer is ready, and they will swap it for chips at the table or explain how it works there.
  4. Wait for the current round to finish before you put any chips down.
  5. Save your questions for the gap between rounds, when the dealer has a moment to answer.
  6. Once you reach the limit you set before arriving, let the round end, pick up your chips and give up the seat.
Part 3

Dealers Have Seen Plenty of First-Timers

Dealers work with new players regularly, and slow, careful questions are part of their job. Standing back to watch a few rounds before sitting down is normal at any table. Nobody expects a newcomer to know the hand signals or the chip habits yet. The casino is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, so there is no need to rush.

Bring ID, even on a visit you plan to spend watching. The legal age for gambling in British Columbia is 19.

Questions
Which table game is easiest to start with?

The guide does not rank the games. Baccarat has no decisions to make once your bet is placed, and some people find that calm. Watching any of the five for a few rounds is a fair way to choose.

Is it fine to just watch without playing?

Yes, watching is fine. Standing back and following a few rounds before sitting down is a normal part of a first visit. If a dealer asks whether you are joining, a polite "just watching, thanks" is enough.
